Prisoner

I know I was crossing a line.
Illicit hours in cafes.
Going deeper than safe.
Thinking it meant something.

Then the temperature dropped.
One day to the next.
I committed a crime.
I've got no defence.

My mind is free
but I'm a prisoner.
Somebody locked me up.

Hard grey walls.
Damp mattress.
Alone in the dark.

I know I'm guilty.
I wanted something I had no right to want.
I started to care —
wanted you to meet me there.

So here I am.
Can't find the words.
Just completing the sentence.

The door opens for visitation.
Let out when you need absolution.
I hold what you bring —
panic, weight, everything breaking.

I'm good at this.
Model prisoner.
Compliant in my cell.

Then five o'clock comes.

Visiting hours over.
You stand.
You sign out.

Door slams.
Lights out.
